Universal Motown Reincarnates Michael Jackson With New CD

Universal Motown Reincarnates Michael Jackson With New CD

michael-jackson-the-remix-suites-album-coverIn honor of the legendary pop icon, Michael Jackson, who died tragically on June 25th, Universal Motown Records is releasing Michael Jackson: The Remix Suite on October 20th.

The project is a tribute CD comprised of a collection of top producers commissioned to remix 12 of their favorite songs from the Jackson 5’s catalogue during the Motown era, including popular tunes by the group such as “ABC and “Dancing Machine,” as well as more obscure records like “Maria” and “Skywriter.”

“It’s no secret that Michael Jackson’s phenomenal talent inspired countless entertainers,” says Universal Motown President Sylvia Rhone. “But his music also inspired many of today’s finest producers. That’s why we thought it would be exciting to invite them to put their own unique spin on his work.”

Enlisted on the project are top-notch producers such as Akon, Polow (Da Don), The Neptunes, Stargate, Dallas Austin, Salaam Remi, and Mark Hoppus (Blink-182), just to name a few.

“We jumped at the opportunity to be involved with this project because Michael is a legend who influenced our entire career and redefined the world of music,” says Pharrell Williams (of The Neptunes), who remixed “Never Can Say Goodbye.”

Producer Salaam Remi, who has worked with Nas, The Fugees, and Amy Winehouse (amongst others), remixed the classic “ABC” by adding a reggae vibe to the song. Commenting on the new version, Remi says he “imagined the Jackson’s taking a trip to Jamaica in the early ’70s with a Jamaican band playing behind them.”

For Polow (Da Don), the challenge he faced in re-creating “Dancing Machine” was “to mix what the Jacksons had done in 1974 with today’s music to create something new that sounds just as good now as it did back in the day.”

The release of Michael Jackson: The Remix Suite follows the model of Universal Motown’s bi-weekly four-part digital suite series, which started online on August 25th until it ended on October 6th.

Wyclef Jean Collaborates With DJ Drama for New 13-Song EP

Wyclef Jean Collaborates With DJ Drama for New 13-Song EP

wyclef-album-artOn November 10th, former Fugees member Wyclef Jean, in conjunction with mixtape honcho DJ Drama, will release on Carnival House via Megaforce/Red, a 13-song EP entitled DJ Drama Presents Wyclef Jean, aka, Toussaint St. Jean: From The Hut, to the Projects, To The Mansion.

In addition to DJ Drama, the EP will feature guest appearances by some of music’s biggest names (Eve, Timbaland, Maino, Cyndi Lauper, and Lil Kim).

From The Hut, to the Projects, To The Mansion revolves around the character Toussaint St. Jean, Jean’s alter ego persona (suggested to him by fellow rapper T.I.). The protagonist in Jean’s musical odyssey is partly derived from the story of Toussaint L’Ouverture, an 18th-century Haitian revolutionary hero that contributed to propelling Haiti into the international spotlight.

In this new role as Toussaint, Jean, who also hails from Haiti, decided to take on a more rebellious and bold persona stating, “Toussaint is more direct.” Jean then goes on to say, “Whatever he’s thinking, he’s going to tell you.”

According to Jean, he reached out to DJ Drama to participate on the project to give the EP a tougher and edgier sound, which he felt was necessary to match the gritty stories told vicariously through Toussaint. “I asked myself, ‘Who’s the toughest guy out there?’ “Then I said, well, DJ Drama is pretty badass. So I called him and asked if he’d be interested in doing a mixtape. He heard what I was up to and he said, ‘We gotta do a book—this is a novel!’ He got excited, and it became more like an EP than a mixtape.”

Tapping into his earlier experiences of poverty, Jean (Toussaint) penned songs such as “The Streets Pronounce Me Dead,” “Warriorz,” “Letter From the Penn,” and “Toussaint vs. Bishop,” which deal with the reality and consequences of street life. On “Slumdog Millionaire,” Jean sums up his life’s journey as going “from the hut to the projects to the mansion.”

Wyclef Jean is scheduled to release his self-titled LP “Wyclef Jean” in March 2010 via Columbia Records.

Below is the track listing:

1. Interlude – From The Hut, To The Projects, To The Mansion

2. Warrior’s Anthem

Guru Set to Release New Album

Guru Set to Release New Album

guruRap veteran, Guru, along with his partner Solar, are scheduled to release their latest collaboration, Guru 8.0 Lost & Found, May 19th via 7 Grand Records.

Although Guru and Solar have had success in the past with their Jazzmatazz series, the former Gangstarr emcee sets the record straight about the direction of the new album. “This is not hip-hop jazz,” explains Guru. “This is straight up hip-hop elevated to a higher plateau, so it shouldn’t be compared to the Jazzmatazz series. The jazzier side is a part of who I am as an entertainer, but doesn’t define who I am as an artist or as a lyricist.”

Despite the inclusion of United Kingdom soul-singer Omar on the song “Ride,” Guru 8.0 Lost and Found, will mostly feature artists on the 7 Grand roster, including K. Born, Highpower, and Doo Wop. The album also includes the tracks “Best Of My Years” and “Fast Lane,” which were inspired by the sounds of vintage and southern hip-hop, respectively.

In addition, Solar, who normally handles production duties, will make his debut as an emcee on the song “After Time.”
