1. Sylvia Rhone Appointed President of Epic Records

    According to reports, veteran music executive Sylvia Rhone has been named President of Epic Records, a label under Sony Music. In her new position, Ms. Rhone will report directly to Epic Records Chairman/CEO L.A. Reid.

    In January 2013, Ms. Rhone partnered with Mr. Reid and Epic Records to distribute her newly launched imprint, Vested In Culture (VIC). Artists listed on the VIC roster include Kat Dahlia, Quadron, Casey Veggies, and Cashius Green.

    Prior to her transition into the Sony Music system, Ms. Rhone previously served as President of Universal’s Motown Records and Chairman/CEO of Warner Music’s Elektra Entertainment Group.

    VIC will remain a label under Sony Music.

  2. Singer-Songwriter Pia Mia Signs with Interscope Records

    Seventeen-year-old Guam native Pia Mia has signed a deal with Interscope Records, as recently announced. Her debut EP, The Gift (Wolfpack/Interscope Records), is available today at digital download and subscription services.

    Speaking on her signing, the viral sensation from the Pacific Islands stated, “I want to show everyone… that people from small places can achieve their dreams no matter how big they are.”

    Joie Manda, President of Urban Music at Interscope Records said, “When I met Pia and heard her sing I was floored. Artists of her magnitude come along very rarely. We are truly excited to help her become a global superstar.”

    Her song “Fight For You” featuring Chance The Rapper will be released exclusively on the original motion picture soundtrack album for Divergent (Interscope Records), available March 11.

  3. Sam Riback Named Atlantic Records SVP/Head of West Coast A&R

    Sam Riback has been promoted to Senior Vice President and Head of West Coast A&R for Atlantic Records, as announced by Atlantic Chairman & CEO Craig Kallman and Chairman & COO Julie Greenwald. 

    “Since coming on board 12 years ago, Sam has rapidly grown into one of the most insightful, creative, and accomplished members of our A&R team,” said Craig Kallman and Julie Greenwald.  “From uncovering outstanding new talent to working with established artists to take their music to the next level, Sam brings exceptional knowledge, dedication, and passion to every project.  Over the past three years, he has done a fantastic job in expanding our A&R footprint on the West Coast, so it gives us great pleasure to announce this much-deserved promotion.”

    "Craig and Julie have been tremendous mentors to me throughout my career at Atlantic,” said Sam Riback.  “I could not be happier leading our West Coast team and to further the long Atlantic tradition of signing and developing the next generation of influential artists."

    Riback rose through the A&R ranks at Atlantic Records and was appointed Vice President in 2011.  He has signed and/or worked with a diverse roster of artists, including Death Cab For Cutie, Santigold, Jason Mraz, Panic! At The Disco, B.o.B, Grouplove, Fitz and the Tantrums, Lykke Li, and others.  Most recently, Riback was responsible for inking a deal between Atlantic and noted independent label Neon Gold.

  4. J. Cole Forms Exclusive Label with Interscope Records

    Roc Nation recording artist J. Cole forms exclusive label, Dreamville, with Interscope Records. Dreamville also announced its first artist signed to the new label is Bas, who is currently supporting J. Cole on his What Dreams May Come tour.

    "Dreamville celebrates the sort of grass roots, out-of-the-box approach to connecting artists to their fans that can help move the music industry into the future.  We are very pleased to welcome Dreamville into the Interscope family," says Joie Manda, President, Urban Music, Interscope Records.

    J. Cole and his business partner, Ibrahim Hamad, launched Dreamville in 2007, before J. Cole became the first signed artist on Jay Z’s Roc Nation.

    “We’re honored and excited to partner with Interscope Records, a legendary and powerful force in the music industry,” commented J. Cole. “We’re ready to add to the history.”

    Bas released his latest project “Quarter Water Raised Me Vol. II” in 2013.” The Dreamville artist was featured on J. Coles “New York Times” with 50 Cent (Born Sinner) and DJ Khaled’s “Hell’s Kitchen” with J. Cole (Suffering from Success).

  5. DJ Drama Joins Atlantic A&R Team

    Atlantic Records announced today that acclaimed Atlanta based DJ/hip-hop artist DJ Drama has joined the company’s A&R staff. In addition to his day-to-day A&R duties, including the discovery of new artists and overseeing recording projects, he will contribute to the artist development process for existing talent on the Atlantic roster.  

    “I’m extremely excited to embark on this new chapter in my relationship with Atlantic Records,” said Drama. “My first two albums as an artist were on Atlantic, and I’m now looking forward to working with Craig and Julie in a new capacity, helping them break the label’s next crop of amazing talent.” 

    “I’m thrilled to welcome Drama to his new role at Atlantic,” said Atlantic Chairman & CEO Craig Kallman. “One of the most accomplished DJs and mixtape masters, he brings brilliant instincts and consummate skills to our A&R team.     In addition to his new partnership with Atlantic, Drama’s newly founded Means Street Studios in Atlanta will become the studio base for Atlantic artists while in the market.

  6. Album Cover: Lady Gaga - Artpop

    Lady Gaga recently unveiled the artwork for her new album, Artpop, designed by visual artists Jeff Koons. With a naked statue in her likeness dominating the frame and fragments of historical figure Sandro Botticelli's famous “The Birth of Venus” painting in the background, Lady Gaga is once again making a bold statement.
